The Sub Pop Singles Club

danielle | New Release, News, Trivia | Thursday, 03 July 2008

From Sub Pop:

“The Sub Pop Singles Club is back, all tan and rested after a shockingly long sabbatical. It is a somewhat louche, world-weary thing with its eye on your wallet. And, for a price, The Sub Pop Singles Club is ready and willing to satisfy you aurally in ways you never dreamed possible.

Without further pandering, here are the facts!

Fact 1!
This run of The Sub Pop Singles Club will run for 1 year only, before returning to its secret island vacation spot for eternity (or until we here at Sub Pop feel masochistic enough to take on coordinating this debacle again.)”

Michael Jackson to grace deep space

Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ among cultural treasures
By KEVIN S. VINEYS, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The best-selling pop album on planet Earth and a disc sent hurtling into deep space are among recordings the Library of Congress will preserve for their cultural significance.

Twenty-five selections were added to the National Recording Registry on Wednesday, part of the library’s attempt to save America’s aural history by archiving recordings deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

The inductees range from Michael Jackson’s 1982 all-time-bestseller “Thriller” and jazz artist Herbie Hancock’s 1973 fusion smash “Headhunters” to the 1977 record of Earth sounds that flew aboard the spacecraft Voyager in the event alien life forms encountered the craft. Other recordings added to the registry include works by Roy Orbison, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Kitty Wells and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

background-color: not green enough

danielle | Gossip!, News, Trivia | Tuesday, 22 April 2008

You have to hand it to CSS. Last week, their bass player, Ira Trevisan, announced she was quitting the rudey Brazilian party starters. And she made few bones about why.

“I am a bit worried about climate change,” she said, though it’s apparent she’s more than a bit concerned. “People should care more and do something. I decided to fly less. CSS will always be in my heart.”

Which is kind of like saying, “The rest of CSS are planet-destroying war pigs and now the moral high ground shall forever be mine, mine I tell you!”

The consequences could reach far and wide. Will CSS be held up forever as green traitors for having the audacity to carry on? Does this point to a post-apocalyptic future where live music will be reigned in by the national borders of its heritage? And couldn’t Ira just have got herself a new TV without a standby function?

‘Jingle Bells’ in Dog Barks? No Thanks
By ALEX MINDLIN,
The New York Times
Posted: 2007-12-03 10:06:39

(Dec. 3) — America’s least-loved Christmas song is a Danish recording of “Jingle Bells,” performed in dog barks. The song — which enjoyed brief success in the United States in 1955 and 1970 — took last place in a test of 579 Christmas recordings, performed by Edison Media Research. Edison played the songs for a national sample of 200 women aged 30 to 49, recruited via e-mail, who said that they either liked or loved Christmas music.

No wonder the sample size was so dreadfully small… could you imagine having to sit through 579 audio clips of Christmas music?

Why Do We Sing More Don’ts Than Dos?

danielle | Trivia | Thursday, 15 November 2007

Go to your iTunes client right now and type “do” in the search bar.

I have about twenty “do” songs: Do I Do, Do It, Do It All Over, Do What Ya Feel, Do You Realise…

Now, type in “don’t”.

There are litterally hundreds. Don’t Walk Away Rene, Don’t Speak, Don’t Step On The Cat, Don’t Wanna Know ‘Bout Evil, Don’t Drink Poison, Don’t Go, Don’t Mix Your Drinks, Don’t Listen To Linda, Don’t Make Me A Target, Don’t You Evah, Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing… don’t don’t don’t.

Fucking hell. This is an official request to musicians everywhere - write more “Do” songs! Doing is so much better than not doing.
