On Wednesday, the law makers of New York opposed a bill that would have kept the New York in the sixth position to allow gay marriages.
Earlier, the assembly had approved the bill and the government of New York David Paterson was the strongest advocate of the bill, who had pledged to sign the gay marriage bill. An election was held to pass the bill among the state Senate. 32 votes were needed to pass the bill but it failed by more than expected margin of eight votes.

Gay marriage is considered legal in Lowa, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts. And from 1st January the gay marriage will also become legal in New Hampshire.

After the voting was over on Wednesday, for the government David Paterson stated that it was the saddest day in his 20 years of public service, as the gay marriage bill was rejected. After the voting was over, the government criticized those senates those who have earlier supported gay marriage but didn’t vote for it.

One of the senate sponsor Thomas Duane who is a Manhattan democrat and also the first openly gay member of the legislature expresses disappointment and anger. He said that he was not expecting such betrayal from the senate members.

During the debate, a conservative minister Sen. Ruben Diaz from the Bronx opposes the most against the bill. He had said that if the issue is kept in front of the voters then they will also reject it.

Democratic Sen. Eric Adams opposes Sen. Ruben Diaz and said to lawmakers to keep aside their religious beliefs and vote for the gay marriage bill.

The supporters were expecting the positive result after the voting. It was expected that only two or three democrats would vote no, but afterwards the supporters were broken out as more than half dozen democrats opposed the bill and even no republican senators’ supports the bill.

The council speaker Christine Quinn of New York said that it is a big loss for every family in New York especially for gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual people in the country.
