On Wednesday, the scientists said that a big iceberg, maybe twice the Hong Kong island size, has been noticed roving nearer towards the south of Australia. The scientist said that this type of event occurs nearly once in a century.

Neal Young, an Australian glaciologist using a satellite imaginary, located that the monster iceberg which is drifting nearer is about 1,700 kilometres away from the south of Australia and is about 19 kilometres long. He said that the ice berg is probably 140 square kilometres i.e. 54 square miles. And the surface area of Hong Kong Island is about 80 square kilometres which is nearly half of the iceberg seen. So, imagine how big the iceberg would be.

He also said that since 19th century the clipper ships are travelling in that trade route between Australia and Britain, but they have never seen or noticed such a big iceberg in that area.

Neal Young from the Australian Antarctic division and a member of Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre told to AFP that he didn’t know any such situation occurring from long time.

The glaciologist said that the iceberg seen may be carved out from the Antarctic nearly about 10 years ago and is slowly floating around in an unusual route. He said that in original it was a very big iceberg nearly about 400 square kilometres and has been split into two or many pieces. This piece of iceberg has been survived in the open ocean from many years. And in the ocean, it is slowly floating in the north or north east direction and is coming nearer to the south of Australia.

This iceberg comes to be known when two icebergs not so large like this one, were found further in the east in the Macquarie Island of Australia, and more than 100 smaller ice chunks were noticed moving towards new Zealand.

Neal young said that this is an uncommon situation but can be more frequent, if the sea temperature goes on rising due to global warming.
