The top news says that the director of a company was arrested for selling a bomb detecting devices to 20 countries including Iraq as well.
According to Avon and Somerset police informed that this 53 year old Jim McCormick from ATSC’s was detained on Friday for a doubt of fraud, which was a misrepresentation. After the BBC investigation assumption it was known that ADE-651 did not work to stop the bomb attacks.
Also earlier, a ban on the export of the devices to Afghanistan and Iraq was announced by the British government, where the British forces are serving.
According to the McCormick, the device was sold from the offices situated in rural area of Somerset, where special electronic cards slotted into it in order to detect the explosives. But according to the BBC Newsnight an investigation reported that computer laboratory said a card examined contained only the tag which was used by shops to prevent theft.
Also there was much anxiety that these detectors have failed in preventing the bomb attacks which have killed many peoples. This ADE-651 has been sold to many of the Middle Eastern countries and also to Bangkok.
The device was made up of swivelling aerial mounted to a center on a hand-grip. It was not at all operated by the battery but instead according to the promotional material, it was powered only by the user’s static electricity.
For the device the Iraqi government has spent around US$85m on this hand held detectors, which is now used at the Baghdad in most of the checkpoint areas. The concept was well understood that about US$40,000 was paid by Iraq for each device but no western government is using it presently.
The BBC learned that Nouri al- Maliki, Iraqi Prime minister has ordered for an investigation into the bomb detectors, which is expected to report shortly.
