12.14.2009 · Posted in World News

According to the news report, an army officer Major Niranjan Basnet was arrested charging torture and killing a school girl during communalist insurgency at the Kathmandu airport on Saturday in a record turn of events. The Basnet was expelled from the UN peacekeeping Forces last week, when a Nepali daily exposed his inclusion in the Nepali reliant. Facing serious criminal charges; he was arrested by Nepal Army’s military police form Tribhuvan International Airport as he arrived on jet airways flight through New Delhi.

Both the army and the government remained introverted about the arrest. Where, Basnet was fluff up to an undisclosed destination where he would be held with further investigations. Basnet is one amongst the four army personnel who were involved in 2004 in illegal arrest of a 15 year old school girl Mania Sunuwar; who was administered electric shocks inside an army quarters in a district named kavre and was left to die without any medical treatments. The teen who was killed had witnessed the rape and killing of another two teenage girls. For years the army denied of being involved in Maina’s disappearance in spite of her body being buried inside the army premises.

However, several governments including US and UK have been repeatedly forcing Nepal to arrest Basnet and other three. But this month there was a renewed protest after it was revealed that the army instead of suspending the Basnet for his chargers had sent him to take part in the UN peacekeeping operations. And thus the outrage forced the UN to expel Basnet last week.

Also this week, the government came up on the decision as to appoint an officiating chief of the army major General Toran Jung Bhadur Singh through UN rights agency to conduct an investigation over the disappearance of nearly 50 people from a torture camp run by the regiment under his command.
