Authorities In Spain Move To Help Western Sahara Hunger Striker
In the Canary Islands of Spain, on Sunday the authorities went to Aminatou Haider – a Western Sahara activist, to save her life who was sitting on a three week hunger strike. The Morocco didn’t allow her to return home so she had made this hunger strike to fulfill her demand.
Haider is staging her hunger strike at the Canary Island airport of Lanzarote. A judge, police officers and a medical examiner visited her on late Sunday at the airport.
They arrived after the Haiders entourage and the regional government has made a formal request to the court to take necessary measures to save the life of the activist.
The doctor said that she needs urgent medical attention as there is in danger stage of her life. One of the members of entourage has warned about her condition earlier, that she was deteriorating day by day. Fernando Peraita said that she is going through a very dangerous period. Though her mental state seems to be better but she is not really well from inside, which is a very dangerous fact. She is also suffering from loss of vision and dizziness. She is spending very bad nights in pain.
The doctor Domingo Perez Hernandez attended her in the airport, and said to the El Pais Newspaper that her life has now become most dangerous. He also informed to the reporters that her life is coming to an end, and if she is not treated as earlier as possible then her life will not last for more than few days or even few hours.
Aminatou Haider was a 42 year old woman, native of Western Sahara. On November 16, she went to a hunger strike as the authorities of Morocco allegedly take away her passport and denied her entry into Western Sahara. They sent her back to Lazarote. Western Sahara is a disputed territory which the Morocco annexed in 1975.
Haider was a mother of two and was campaigning for the independence of her native place, the Western Sahara from Morocco’s. She camped at the Lanzarote airport and drew the attention about her cause. Several celebrities including Javier Bardem, an Oscar winning Spanish actor and a film director Pedro Almodovar backed her.
On Sunday, Haider become very weak and remained in a small Airport room. She was only able to emerge in a wheelchair that too only to toilets by one of her entourage member.
Peraita said that Haider has also appealed to the international community to protect her family living in Western Sahara. He also said that the governments of Spanish and Morocco both were responsible for this.
The Spain government has offered Haider a Spanish citizenship or a refugee status so that she can return home, but she refused to accept both the option as she doesn’t want to live as a foreigner in her own country.
